In 1983, a group of visionary developers began transforming 1,500 acres of undeveloped Hill Country into what would become San Antonio's most prestigious address — a private, master-planned residential community anchored by a championship golf course, a full-service country club, and gates that have never stopped being guarded.
Today, The Dominion encompasses more than 1,600 custom residences along tree-lined streets that wind through the contours of the land rather than against them. The community's founding philosophy — thoughtful planning, architectural diversity, uncompromised privacy — remains as evident today as it was four decades ago. Walk any street within the gates and you'll see it: stone façades softened by mature oaks, iron gates, homes that sit as naturally on their lots as the land itself.
Location, location, Loop 1604.
The Dominion's address — just off IH-10 West north of the 1604 interchange in zip code 78257 — places it at one of San Antonio's most strategic crossroads. Residents can be at La Cantera's shops in under five minutes, at USAA's world headquarters in ten, and at the South Texas Medical Center in under fifteen. Downtown San Antonio and the airport are both a comfortable less than 25 minute drive.
But the community's genius is that nothing about its interior feels metropolitan. Cross through the guard gates and traffic disappears. Homes back to fairways, nature preserves, and creek corridors.
The gates, and what's behind them.
Security is the community's foundational promise. The Dominion operates 24-hour, manned guard gates at every entrance. All residents, vendors, and guests are verified. Roaming patrol by off duty San Antonio Police officers supplement the static gate presence around the clock. For residents — many of whom travel frequently, host high-profile guests, or simply value uninterrupted peace — this level of security is not a luxury but a baseline.
The Dominion Homeowners Association (DHOA) maintains common areas, enforces architectural standards, and coordinates resident programs. The HOA board — on which I currently serve — meets regularly to address community matters, making this one of the few luxury neighborhoods in San Antonio with such active, resident-driven governance.
